So close to the major sites, Saintonge Dorée – set between the valleys of the Boutonne and Charente – is the gateway to an exceptional historic heritage.

Our role is to help you enjoy the peacefulness of the area and soak up simple yet authentic experiences based on the values that characterise our region: a delightful natural environment including themed gardens; discovering local traditions and legends with local people; the simplicity of Romanesque architecture and the vast array of religious buildings and last but not least, the sensory pleasures of the table and local produce.

Make a point of visiting the magnificent 12th century Romanesque church of St Pierre at Aulnay de Saintonge and the Abbaye Royale at St Jean d’Angély, a fine example of 17th and 18th classical century architecture.  Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites, being on the St James of Compostella trail.  Visit the historic Romanesque churches in Matha, not forgetting the peaceful atmosphere of the Jardin de la Paix (Peace garden).  Artists appreciate the natural setting and pleasant cultural ambiance of St Savinien sur Charente, a stone-built village full of character on the banks of a lazy river.
